Westside High School Names New Cheerleading & Dance Coaching Teams

Westside High School has hired a new coaching staff to lead the district’s Varsity and JV cheerleading programs, as well as the district’s Dance program. All coaches will be part of tryouts for Westside High School cheerleading squads and dance squads for the 2020-2021 school year.

Lisa Butler has been hired as the Westside High School Cheer Coordinator. This new position was created to provide oversight, organization, budgetary management, and cohesion between all three WHS cheer squads (Varsity, JV and 9th grade.) Butler will serve as a key communicator for parents and the community, manage finances and fundraising for all three squads, and offer support and leadership for all student athletes and coaches involved in our program. Butler, a teacher at Westside Middle School, has coached the Westside High School Dance Team for several years.

Lauren Warnock has been hired as the Westside High School Head Varsity Cheerleading Coach. Lauren coached the Westside Competition Cheer Squad in 2018-2019, leading the team to Westside’s first state cheer championship. Warnock has extensive cheerleading and coaching experience, including as Head Coach of Marian High School Cheer, Head Instructor at UCA Cheer Camps, and work with the National Cheer Championships in Orlando.

Erin Conner will remain the Assistant Varsity Cheerleading Coach. Conner, with extensive experience in gymnastics, choreography and coaching, has served as Interim Head Coach of the Westside Varsity Team for several months. Conner, an Educational Assistant at Westside High School, brings vast knowledge of technical skills and training to support our student athletes in tumbling, strength and performance abilities.

Jaycee O’Dell joins Westside High School as the new Westside High School Head JV Cheerleading Coach. Jaycee, a former Wayne State cheerleader, has since led the cheerleading squads at Wayne High School and Bellevue East High School. O’Dell hopes to help Westside student athletes grow as both cheerleaders and people through their participation in our program.

Amanda Knight will continue to lead the Westside High School 9th Grade Cheerleading Squad. Knight has been a leader and mentor to our freshmen, offering consistency and guidance in her time with the Warriors.

Katy (Bezy) Moore is the new coach of the Westside High School Dance Team, and the new Westside High School Competition Dance Team, the Westside High School Dance Company. Moore was a collegiate dancer with the UNO Dance Team, and competed at nationals for three years. Moore currently teaches competitive dance at area studios; her coaching experience includes work at Omaha Central High School and with the UNO Mavericks.

Multiple candidates with promising resumes and impressive credentials applied for these positions. We are grateful to all who applied, and we are proud of the positive and hard-working student athletes that inspire such excitement among professionals to be part of this program.

Leaders are working on what tryouts could look like later this Spring. Please stay tuned as we manage these uncertain times, and await guidance from public health officials as to when closures will end for Westside Community Schools.
