Dana Christensen Honored by NSCTA
During the recent NSCTA (Nebraska Speech Communication & Theater Association) annual convention in Norfolk, NE, the Dale E. Black Outstanding Young Teacher Award was presented. "Young" is defined as having a maximum of seven years (including the present year) of teaching experience. The award is given for such traits as enthusiasm for work, scholarly integrity, knowledge of subject matter, innovation, ability to motivate and stimulate students, worthy goals in teaching, and professional promise including such areas as involvement in professional associations, research, and writing. Primary emphasis will be given to the individual's classroom performance.
This year's recipient of the Dale E. Black Outstanding Young Teacher Award was Dana Christensen, formerly the Millard South debate coach, now at Omaha Westside. He has been coaching for a total of three years. Over those three years, his students have competed at the state and national level. Rich Brown, who nominated Christensen says that he connects with students that many others would not and trains them to create unique, effective arguments.

College Board Honors Westside with a Place on AP Achievement List
The College Board recently honored Westside Community Schools with a place on its AP Achievement List. The District is one of just 388 school districts nationwide selected for this honor. Westside received the recognition for opening advanced placement (AP) classes to a significantly broader pool of students, while maintaining or improving the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher. From 2008-2010, Westside High School increased the number of students participating in AP classes from 222 to 288, while improving the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher, the score typically needed to earn college credit. That percentage of students earning college credit rose to 63 percent in 2010, up from 56 percent in 2008. The College Board's Advanced Placement Program enables students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school.
